William Hill Poker Info

Today’s William Hill Poker review will focus on just the poker side of things, but I always find it useful to know what the company looks like as a whole. The sheer size of the company indicates stability and a very low likelihood of anything bad happening to your money. You should also take some comfort knowing that William Hill is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

Software Review

Aside from safety and reputation, software is one of the most important things to consider when choosing where to play online. I can tell you from experience that there are few things worse than playing real money poker on a poor software platform. Random disconnects, slow deals and eye-straining software are an absolute nightmare. Not only is it annoying and hard on the eyes, but poor software indicates a lack of professionalism.

The William Hill software download is very solid for the most part. The one major issue I have with their download software is the fact that it works for the PC only. William Hill does not support Macs or mobile devices with native apps. However, they do now have an instant play option that is compatible just about any desktop. Mac and Linux users may finally play at William Hill now.

If you do download the PC software, you’ll find the William Hill software a pleasure to work with. It installs quickly and welcomes you with crisp graphics and fast-moving dealers. This is the same software used by other iPoker Network sites and it is definitely one of the better platforms on the market. The graphics look modern but William Hill has opted for a minimalist styling scheme that’s completely distraction-free. As a former high volume player myself, I can appreciate it when a site goes that route. Detailed graphics look nice at first, but simpler designs end up being a lot easier on the eyes.

One minor annoyance I had with the software was the default way in which the lobby lists cash game tables. When you sign in for the first time and visit the cash games lobby, you’ll find that the tables are all grouped by stakes in the list. All you do is pick your stakes and then William Hill automatically selects a seat at a random table. I found this annoying because I like to check out every table myself and join the one that seems to have the most action. Fortunately, you can change it back to the full list view inside the “settings” area within the software.

The software comes with all the standard features you would expect from a modern poker site. All the basics such as four color decks, automatic rebuys and so on make it convenient for casual players and grinders alike.

William Hill also has a couple of unique features that you won’t often see elsewhere. One of these are toast notifications that show you the outcomes of hands played at other tables without forcing you to change the focus from your current table. A few other interesting features include late-entry for SNGs, instant rematches for heads-up tournaments and ante cash games that encourage action.

Cash Game Variety

Cash game variety is a definite strong point for William Hill Poker. Where an increasing number of established sites are cutting their lineups down to just Texas Holdem and Omaha, William Hill is actively expanding its list of games. They’ve added new games within the past year and now offer a greater variety of cash games than anyone else.

The full lineup at William Hill now consists of:

  • Texas Holdem
  • Omaha
  • Omaha Hi-Lo
  • 7 Card Stud
  • 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo
  • 5 Card Stud
  • Razz
  • Fast Fold Texas Holdem
  • Fast Fold Omaha

These games are offered in fixed limit, pot limit and no-limit in stakes ranging from €0.02/€0.04 to €5/€10 no-limit and €20/€40 fixed-limit. The default table currency is US dollars but William Hill will convert whatever currency you use to dollars when you join.

 Tournaments

As a member of the popular iPoker Network, William Hill has no problem running tournaments of all sizes at a wide range of stakes. The large player base contributes to a healthy tournament environment that includes large guaranteed events, satellites to live tournaments and daily freerolls.

Guaranteed tournaments are hosted every day of the week. The Daily Classics tournaments run every day at buyins ranging from €1 to €10 with prize pools of €2,000 to €5,000 while the Sunday Lineup consists of 14 tournaments hosted every Sunday for a grand total of €250,000 in prizes. The largest weekly tournament they host is simply called “The Big One” and it guarantees €100,000 for a €75 buyin.

Sit-n-Go tournaments are even more numerous with new games getting started around the clock. You’ll find SNGs at buyins ranging from €0.10 to €5,000 with room for 1, 3, 6 and 9 players. William Hill is also home to the ever-popular Jackpot and Twister games that offer prizes rivaling the biggest multi-table tournaments.

Jackpot SNGs play just like normal tournaments except you get a bonus payout for taking first place in consecutive tournaments. At the highest end are the Fort Knox tables which award a payout in excess of €100,000 if you take first place in 4 in a row. Twister SNGs are played as winner-take-all 3-man tournaments in which the prize pool is decided randomly at the beginning of the game. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to play for a prize pool equal to 1,000 times the initial buyin.

Customer Support

Considering the massive number of people employed by William Hill, it should be no surprise that customer support is a strong point. You can reach a real person 24 hours a day via phone, e-mail and live chat. They also have a wide-ranging FAQ section that can answer most questions without even having to talk to someone.

All in all, William Hill Poker is a solid poker site. The games variety, traffic, tournament options and customer support are all very well done. The one major flaw remains their failure to support Macs or other operating systems. At the very least, William Hill Poker needs to add a Mac download and instant play option. Other than that, they get all the important things right to make for a pleasant playing experience.
