Party Poker Review

Party Poker is one of the oldest and most successful poker sites on the planet. The PartyPoker.com website was established in 1997 and eventually grew to become the largest poker site of the time. Several founding members of the company became billionaires at one point and Party Poker existed as the face of online poker.

Party Poker Info

Today, Party Poker faces increasing competition from other real money poker sites, but it still remains one of the most active places to play today. It is not uncommon to log in any time of the day or night and find more than 10,000 active players online at a time. With a wide variety of cash games and large guaranteed cash games, Party Poker is definitely worth your consideration.

Software Review

Party Poker has the benefit of experience and years’ worth of feedback from players in developing a functional software platform. Even in the early days, the Party Poker software looked nice, ran quickly and rarely crashed. They have revamped the software numerous times since then but it’s still a high quality offering.

Compatibility: The PartyPoker.com software is compatible with practically every electronic device on the market. There are full download options for both PC and Mac users as well as apps that you can get for iOS and Android. If none of those work, they also have an instant play option that requires nothing more than your internet browser.

Lobby: An intuitive lobby simplifies the process of looking for the games you want. Use the tabs across the top of the lobby to choose the game type you want (cash games, sit-n-go, etc.) and then the three filter boxes beneath that to further refine the list. For example, you can use the various filters to show only 2-seat $3/$6 no-limit cash games if that’s what you want. The lobby itself cannot be resized, but all tables can be resized at will.

Tables: Tables are pretty Spartan by design standards, which is a good thing in my book. A simple, dark-colored table, basic player icons and large cards keep the focus on what’s actually happening in each hand.

No HUDs Allowed: You should also know that Party Poker has been working on preventing the use of heads-up displays (HUDs) that advanced players use to keep track of opponents and display statistics. If you consider yourself a casual player, this should be welcome news. If you can’t live without a HUD, you will need to play elsewhere.

Casual Players Welcome: Furthermore, the software keeps player names anonymous until you actually take a seat and play a hand. This measure is also designed to make the games friendlier for casual players as it prevents sharks from searching for and following specific players from table to table.

Cash Game Variety

If Texas Holdem and/or Omaha are your games, you will have no shortage of cash game variety. Party Poker hosts both types of games in the fixed limit, no-limit and pot limit formats with tables for two, six or nine players.

There are always a lot of players online so you will have no shortage of tables to choose from. It may not always look like it at first glance, but remember that Party Poker groups tables by stakes and type. For example, look at the first screenshot posted above. If you don’t look closely, you may think there are only three different $5/$10 no-limit Holdem tables. However, a closer look shows that there are actually 56 active tables (42 heads-up tables, 12 six-seat tables and two nine-seat tables).

There is plenty of variety but again, only if you like Texas Holdem and Omaha. Every other game type is missing completely. PartyPoker does not offer Stud, Hi/Lo or draw games. They focus 100% of their effort on the two most popular poker variations.

Stakes: No-limit Holdem games start out at $0.01/$0.02 with a $2 buyin and go up from there to a maximum of $25/$50 with a $5,000 buyin. Fixed limit Holdem games start at $0.02/$0.04 and go up to $30/$60. Pot limit Omaha games start at $0.01/$0.02 and go as high as $5/$10.

Fast Forward Cash Games: All the major poker sites are getting on the “fast fold” bandwagon and Party Poker is no exception. Fast Forward poker tables eliminate the waiting that usually occurs when you fold a hand. Instead of sitting around and waiting for the next hand to be dealt, you are instantly shuffled to a new table just as a new hand begins.

Party Poker Tournaments

Any site as large as PartyPoker.com is bound to have an active tournament scene. Thus, it is no surprise to find more than $1.6 million in guaranteed prize pool events every week along with hundreds of normal multi-table tournaments and SNGs of all types. On top of that, Party Poker devotes a significant portion of its promotional efforts to attracting tournament players.

Guaranteed events play a prominent role in Party’s tournament lineup. Every weekend they host a multitude of tournaments with prize pools ranging from a few thousand dollars to as much as $150,000. The biggest weekly tournament happens on Sundays with a $150K guaranteed event that they call “The Main Event.”

Party Poker takes a unique but sensible approach to listing its tournament offerings. If you visit PartyPoker.com and click on the “tournaments” tab, you will see all guaranteed events organized by buyin. They have one area reserved for $2.20 to $11 buyin tournaments with 39 events and a total of $106,500 guaranteed. Another lineup consists of $22 to $55 events with $375,000 in total guarantees. Move it up a level and you’ll find the “Heavyweight” category which features $109 tournaments and a total of $700,000 in guaranteed prize pools.

You can also log in to the software and visit the tournaments tab to sort and filter tournaments according to your criteria. You can select from guaranteed tournaments, satellites, freerolls and special events and then further refine the list by buyin and format (freezeout, rebuy, etc.).

Satellite tournaments are also quite numerous with Party hosting online events that send the winners to far-flung locations to play in major land-based events such as the WPT and WSOP. Party Poker loves to be represented at major tournaments, so they always have some kind of special running for live satellites.

Customer Support and Reputation

I have nothing negative to say about Party’s customer support and reputation. This is a licensed poker site in the UK that has been paying winners since the late 90s. Party Gaming (now bwin.party after a merger with Bwin Interactive) is a publicly traded company with a healthy business model. There is no reason to believe they still stop paying players any time soon.

Customer support is more than adequate with toll free numbers available in multiple countries staffed by multilingual support personnel 24 hours a day. You can also get quick answers via e-mail and live chat any time of the day or night.
