888 Poker Review

888 Poker has come a long way over the past several years. What was once a smaller and often overlooked poker site has now become one of the biggest names in online poker. In fact, 888Poker ranks only behind PokerStars in pure traffic numbers. Although 888 isn’t quite as large as PokerStars, most people will tell you that the player pool is significantly softer at 888Poker.com and I tend to agree.

When it comes to getting started, yo should have no problems there as 888 is widely compatible. The poker software is both PC and Mac friendly plus they have an instant play option for anyone not interested in downloading anything. All in all, 888 Poker gets all the most important things right. In today’s 888 Poker review, we’ll cover all this and much more in great detail.

Software Review

888Poker completely revamped its software several years back and now has one of the better offerings on the market. The much-needed update was largely responsible for bringing 888 Poker up to speed in comparison to other sites. The new software is clean, easy on the eyes and functional. Best of all, it is fully compatible with all operating systems. They have a standard PC download, a Mac-compatible download and an instant play option for everyone else.

The first time you log in, you will be presented with a basic lobby that shows a quick selection of popular game types and stakes. This option is convenient because you can just pick your game type and 888 Poker will take you to the first table with an open seat that meets your requirements.

However, I find the basic lobby annoying as I would rather have the option to see all open tables and sort them by number of players, percentage of players seeing the flop and average pot size. Fortunately, there is an easy fix for this. Just select the “all games” tab at the top of the screen and you’ll be taken to the regular full list of tables.

The software deserves credit for keeping the focus on playing poker. The design team did away with cluttered tables in favor of a sleek, modern interface that features bold colors, a plan background and large playing cards. Personally, I have always been annoyed by poker sites that try too hard to replicate a real table with useless pictures of cigars, fancy carpets and so on. 888 Poker instead opts for the simple approach and I am happy for that.

Mobile Apps

888 Poker offers well-designed mobile apps for anyone with an Android, iPhone or iPad. These apps can be installed on your mobile device and then used to play in standard cash games, SNAP games (more on that later) and even multi-table tournaments. It is especially refreshing to see the mobile apps support MTTs as most mobile poker apps do not support tournament play.

Cash Game Variety

The cash games at 888 Poker consist of Texas Holdem, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Stud and Stud Hi/Lo. These games are all available in the fixed limited, pot limit and no-limit formats. The one complaint I have in terms of game selection is the fact that the vast majority of the action congregates at the Texas Holdem and Omaha tables. Traffic is high at most stakes for Holdem and Omaha, but it can be tough to find anything running in the Stud and Hi/Lo variants. Then again, that’s the story at most poker sites.

Cash game tables for all game types include a selection of 3-seat, 5-seat, 6-seat, 9-seat and 10-seat tables. You will also find a variety of tables with special rules such as heads-up, turbo, deep stack, push/fold and bad beat jackpots.

All games are hosted in the US dollar format by default. It would be nice to see other currencies, but 888 Poker has a presence around the world and has defaulted to the most common currency among its customers. However, they do accept deposits in a wide range of currencies. If you deposit in something other than US dollars, 888 Poker will perform an automatic currency conversion to USD for as long as you’re there.

Stakes: No limit games start out at 1c/2c ($2.00 buyin) and go up from there to as high as $500/$1000 ($100,000 buyin). Fixed limit games start at 2c/4c and go up $50/$100. Needless to say, players of all bankrolls will find the action they need at 888Poker.

SNAP Poker: SNAP poker is 888’s version of fast-fold poker. In SNAP cash games, you join a player pool consisting of dozens of players. You are seated at a random table and play hands as normal, except folding automatically takes you out of that table and moves you to a new table just as a new hand is getting underway. This results in you getting to see way more hands per hour (200+ per hour) because all waiting between hands is eliminated.

With upwards of 10,000 players logged in at peak times, 888 Poker can support a thriving tournament scene. Guaranteed tournaments are plentiful with something new happening every day. If you click on the tournaments tab and then select “special” you will see a long list of guaranteed prize pool events.

Guaranteed prize pools in excess of $100,000 are hosted multiple times a week. Every Sunday, they host a $100K guarantee in addition to other scheduled tournaments with varying prize pools. Just as I was writing this review, I managed to find a special $1,000,000 guaranteed tournament with a first place prize of $290,000. There is some serious money to be had here.

Small stakes players are not forgotten either. Daily freerolls in addition to low buyin tournaments and cheap satellites to bigger tournaments keep everything accessible to players of all skill levels. Speaking of satellites, 888 Poker frequently hosts low-to-high stakes satellites that send the winners to major land-based events such as the World Series of Poker.

Sit & Go tournaments are also well represented at 888. The buyins for single table tournaments start out at 1c and go up from there to as high as $1,000. Variations include standard cash SNGs, heads-up contests, turbos, super turbos, step tournaments, satellites to large MTTs, double-ups and all-in or nothing contests.

Real Money Deposit Methods

The 888 company is home to a truly international player base so they offer a pretty wide range of deposit methods. It’s possible your list of deposit options will look different than mine based on your location, but here’s the full list of accepted methods that I was able to find on the 888 website and by logging in to the cashier from the UK.

Customer Support

The 888 Poker customer support department has long received mixed reviews. They work great for basic questions, but can be frustrating to deal with if you have some sort of complex issue. Like all poker sites, 888 Poker is required to verify your identity at some point. I have found mixed reports from players as far as ease of verification goes. Some players are verified immediately while others have had to deal with back-and-forth e-mails to prove their identities.

All that aside, 888 Poker does pay all winners. If you do have to verify, they will get you paid sooner or later. In most cases, the key word there is “sooner.”
