Trust plays an all-important role in online poker given the international and virtual nature of the game. Poker site reviews serve a vital function in weeding out the useless poker sites from those that are worth your time and money. If you think about it, anyone can set up a website and promise the world. It is only through experience that we can see which sites actually follow through.
Our reviews are designed to be as straightforward and unbiased as possible. And to be completely honest, it does make for some dry reading. We don’t find it helpful to toss in a bunch of exclamation points (!!!) or fill reviews with colorful language, big promises and other nonsense. We want to give you the straight up truth in as few words as possible so you can make a decision free of biased input.
However, we do have our own favourites and we do not make an attempt to hide that fact. If we believe one poker site is the best for cash games and another is the best for tournaments, we’ll let you know. After all, some of this whole process is subjective. There are a lot of high quality poker sites out there so you’re never going to get a 100% consensus. We do our best to keep it factual, but we’re also not afraid to make recommendations for certain types of poker sites.
Furthermore, we give every legitimate poker site an honest chance. As long as an online poker room runs fair games and pays its players, it deserves an honest review. Poker sites that cannot meet basic minimum levels of security and trust don’t even get a mention here unless it’s a warning not to play there.
Points of Emphasis in Our Poker Reviews
Every review is unique but we like to use some what of a formulaic approach in an effort to give every poker site similar treatment. Our poker site reviews begin with basic background information about each site such as when it was established, who owns it and what sort of reputation it has among players.
The primary concern with any review is to give you an idea of how reliable and safe it is for real money play. Beyond that, we also review each site’s ability to process real money deposits, how quickly it pays out winners, which games it has on offer, how much traffic it has, what the software is like and what types of tournaments they host.
We hope that by the time you finish reading any of our poker reviews, you will know which poker site is truly the best for you as an individual. We will certainly share our opinions as far as overall quality goes, but we also understand that everyone has different needs and preferences. The end goal is to leave you satisfied and confident that you know everything you need to make the right decision.
Here are just some of the aspects we intend to cover in each review.
Background Information: Who owns the site? What previous projects have the owners been involved in? How long have they been in business? Does the ownership have a positive reputation in how it runs businesses?
Reputation Among Real Players: What do other review websites say? What do people say about the site on poker discussion forums? Does the poker site promptly pay all winners or does it have a history of making excuses not to pay?
Traffic in Cash Games and Tournaments: Traffic can make or break a poker site. An online poker room can have all the cash game tables and tournaments in the world but it doesn’t do much good if there is nobody there to play. This is one of the most important points we cover in every review.
Promotions and Deposit Bonuses: The oldest marketing technique in online poker is to give players a bunch of cash in return for signing up and playing. We want to make sure you understand how every deposit bonus works so you can make an informed decision. Not all deposit bonuses were created equal.
Quality of Software: Few things are more annoying than catching pocket Aces in the hole only to have your connection time out and your hand folded automatically. Buggy, slow software can kill an otherwise solid poker site.
Ease of Depositing: High quality poker sites are usually pretty reliable when it comes to making it easy to fund your account. We will let you know if there are any concerns in this regard and provide you with a list of all deposit methods.
Speed of Withdrawals: This is arguably the most important aspect of all. It doesn’t do much good to play at the best poker site and win a bunch of money if you can’t withdraw it within a reasonable amount of time.
These days, anyone can set up a website and begin publishing online poke reviews. That is ultimately a good thing for the industry as it provides a nice variety of viewpoints and effectively crowd-sources the process of figuring out which poker sites are good and which should be avoided.
However, it is nearly impossible to determine the credentials of those writing the many reviews you see on the internet. We see evidence of this all too often with troubled poker sites given glowing reviews simply because they have lucrative affiliate programs that pay top dollar to webmasters who send them new players.
This is why we believe the process is important. Our process is actually a two-pronged approach the relies on our own, personal experiences with each poker site combined with what we hear from other real players. We do this by testing and vetting every poker site that we review and staying involved in all the major poker discussion forums. We feel this approach gives us the best possible combination of firsthand experience plus alternative viewpoints from other people.
Who We Are: BestPokerSite.com is a joint effort between two long term poker players. I started my poker career in 2004 as a college student playing in shorthanded cash games at the likes of Party Poker, PokerStars, Full Tilt, Ultimate Bet and many others. At one point, I was 8-tabling $5/$10 cash games on Party Poker before eventually moving over into the business side of things.
My partner has been playing since 2006 with more of a tournament focus. He even made it to the World Series of Poker in 2008 and thus provides a complementary tournament background to my cash game background.
All told, we have both been through the good times and the bad. We have dealt with terrible poker sites, made lots of money, lost money when mainstream poker sites went into meltdown (thanks Carbon Poker) and much more. Together, we have been through it all and feel qualified to give you the real deal on the best poker sites and the worst. We hope you find our poker reviews useful and reliable. As always, feel free to contact us any time with questions and suggestions.
